Gilbert Allis 1879 - 1932. The First RDPSA.

I recently established communications with a descendant of Gilbert James Allis, the first RDPSA and author of the "The Postal History and  Postage Stamps of the Cape of Good Hope", the first authorative reference work on Cape stamps, most especially the Triangles. He is also of interest because he was the first person to be given access to the original Woodblock plates by the SA Museum in 1927. These appeared as B/W prints in his book. Others subsequently did the same, most notably and notoriously, A. A. Jurgens RDPSA.

I used some of the information that I received from the family in my recent entry into SACS' (South African Collectors' Society) 1-2-3 Cup  competition. You can see it in the link below.  The 1-2-3 Cup is a 'club' compettion that encourages participation more than it rewards innovation, excellence and merit. For some curious reason this competition is no longer attracting many entries.

Any questions, please email me.
