As the postcard states, the view is of Meiktila, Burma. It would later be the site of a major WW2 battle.

By 1900 amateur photography was such a popular hobby that many soldiers of the Imperial Garrison in SA used their photos as the image for a postcard. The above is curious because it shows an imperial connection with Burma. Britain viewed Burma as a market to be captured for backdoor trade with China. Burma came under British rule in three stages, each marked by an Anglo-Burmese War fought in 1824, 1852 and 1885. When Britain completed its conquest of Burma the kingdom was annexed as a colonial province of its Indian Empire in 1886. When Burmese guerilla resistance continued into the 1890s the British ruthlessly destroyed entire villages. This postcard was presumably taken by a soldier serving in the British Army in Burma before he was transferred to the Imperial Garrison in Cantonment Middelburg (TVL), South Africa.

My display is in a different format to yours. I woirry that I might spoil the flow of your wonderfully presented and knowledgeable material, that it might appear as a bump in the road. BTW, did you see my similar submission on your New Zealand post? You seem to have lost the NZ image?
