Col MacKenzie - Bambata Rebellioon & Luderitz, S.W.A.
Quote from Jamie Smith on May 29, 2026, 10:54 pmAt a meeting in Johannesburg last Wednesday a short presentation on the Bambati rebellian was shown. I mentioned that back in the late 1970's, I had handled a box of ephemera from the leader of the expdition - Col. MacKenziewith, with Peter Vogenbeck in the Carlton Center. I did buy a few bits at the time, now unfortunately sold but I did have some photostats which I promised to send to the presenter.
It was only when I looked for the photostats that I relised how much I had copied and even more important, the historical significance of what I had. So I intend to post what I have for those who need some of the information contained in the letters and reports.
What is not usually mentioned about Col MacKenzie is that not only was he in charge of the military connected to the rebellian, but he also led C Force when they entered Luderitz, SWA in late 1914. In his civilian life he lived in a house called Cotswold, near Durban, owned the transport system from Durban to Dalagoe Bay (That is Oxen, wagons and the service stations) , and was a poet/cartoonist in his spare time.
