Cape of Good Hope Squared Octagonal Datestamp - 1887

The Squared Octagonal Datestamp

This attractive Victorian datestamp was also based on a British design. Goldblatt tells us that it was used exclusively within the GPO Cape Town as a "simultaneous defacing and dating" handstamp ie. no other post office in the Cape Colony received the SOD. It was also used as a backstamping receiver. Its distinctive design includes a double octagon frame line. It is unlikely to be confused with other datestamps. They are uncommon but by no means scarce.
