Herewith my tuppence worth. This is from my Union WW2 Clive Peter (the Sailor Boy on stamp) display. I submit it here because the 9d NZ is a lovely looking stamp that fits in here almost as closely as a Kiwi tattoo on our Bok Sailor Boytjie's arm. It shows that Boks and Kiwis fought together in North Africa during WW2 in order that the light of Freedom may never die. And also that Allied stamps from countries like NZ and presumably Australia, GB., etc, were equally valid on soldiers wartime mail to SA? Its 11d postage seems a lot.
19142. WW2 Cover from 'Up North'. EGYPT 37 PREPAID 17 AUG 42' to JOHANNESBURG. Postage comprises NZ 9d 'Maori Panel' and Union of SA 2d Large War Effort 'Sailor'. EGYPT PREPAID 37 was the Base Depot at Helwan (whick allowed mixed Allied stamp as postage?).
