Germany came late to the 'Scramble for Africa' and elsewhere. Towards the end of the 19th Century, it began to rival Great Britain in its global colonial and imperial ambition. Defeat in the First World War and the loss of its colonies was one of the contributing causes of the Second World War, indeed modern historians increasingly see the two wars as one. Despite the relatively short period of German colonial philately and postal history, a surprising quantity of wonderfully varying material exists. Peter Vogenbeck's auction house offers much excellent material from the German colonial era. He lived for some long time in South Africa where he and his wife are fondly remembered  by collectors.
