This interesting piece of historic writing brings back a flood of ugly memories of South Africa in the 1970s, especially of the often seedy and rather sordid border crossing points that like police stations smelled of BB "twak", Cobra floor polish, vomit and Jeyes fluid. Your reference to Cape Town University reminded me that I once subscribed to the Cape Vulture Study Group. In return, I received a nice bumper sticker which I placed on the back of my brand new Ford bakkie's tailgate.  I doubt I have ever seen a Cape vulture. Yesterday a huge bird was circling high in the sky over Cambridge. Big, wide wingspan, perhaps a cunningly disguised surveillance drone intended to enforce social distancing?
