Transvaal date-stamp catalogue

For those who don't see The Transvaal Philatelist, Alex Visser and I have recently embarked on a catalogue of Transvaal date-stamps up to Union;  the first part, AANGEWIJS to BISLEY, has just appeared in the latest  TP (vol 55, pp. 26 - 45).  Date-stamps are listed in chronological order by earliest known date, but using Putzel's numbering (and the numbering in Alex Visser's Addenda) for reference rather than create yet another set of different numbers.   Each date-stamp is described and illustrated, with comments if needed, and the earliest and latest known dates of use are given.

We are very aware that this is very much a work in progress - new date-stamps are still turning up quite frequently (see attached sample entry for  a recently-discovered date-stamp for ALEWIJNSKOP), as are new earliest and latest dates of use.   A main purpose of this catalogue is to encourage fellow-collectors to tell us about unrecorded date-stamps and dates - we plan to publish updates through the internet.  So please get in touch with any new information.

Here, with many thanks to the editor of The Transvaal Philatelist for his kind permission to reproduce it, is a full copy of Part 1 [AANGEWIJS to BISLEY] of our catalogue of Transvaal date-stamps until Union.

We are very aware that this is a work in progress in all senses.  Part 2 is in preparation; we hope to publish it in the next issue of The Transvaal Philatelist, in July – at that rate, completion will take several years.

More to the present point, I would be grateful for any comments, corrections, or additions – new date-stamps, earlier and later dates of use, better images. We will use these to update the Parts already published, and will put these updates on the Internet so that they can be freely available to fellow philatelists.

The South African Philately Club is very pleased and proud to assist the Transvaal Study Circle and the Transvaal Philatelist in this time of pandemic, lock-down and irregular postal services. We are especially pleased that they have responded so quickly to the needs of their members by accepting our offer to host articles on-line which they cannot currently distribute by normal postal channels. We thank the Transvaal Study Circle and the Transvaal Philatelist for choosing to use this website as a means of distribution to their members.

If any other philatelic societies are in a similar predicament, the South African Philately Club is eager and willing to discuss with them how we can best asssist you. We realise that some society's have concerns about the security and intellectual copyright of their work. Visitors to this site should note that in our opinion all material posted here remains the copyright of the poster, not of the South African Philately Club. Thus it cannot be downloaded or copied in any form without the express written agreement of the person or society posting it. Should you wish to download this material, please contact the poster first ie.  Bas Payne (bas.payne@gmail.com)

I am very happy to allow anyone to download Part 1 of the catalogue of date-stamps provided that this for personal interest and research.
