Thanks for posting this. However, there is very little that is new or interesting philatelically-speaking. With all due credit to your father and the millions of others of his generation who collected stamps and stuck them on pages, this sort of material comes up for auction a lot. The fact is that not much of this material is particularly 'special' making it difficult to sell today unless it is put into a value-for-money bundle that can be sold at an attractive price. That said, my advice is to hold on to it because it is a family heirloom and to try to add to it from time to time, especially some postal history (covers) which you don't show. It is a stamp collection after all. That said - I had to say it otherwise I would not have felt I was being honest with you - there are some individual stamps here, some embellished with good postmarks that make an attractive difference from the commonplace mint. I like the 10/- revenue, the two 1910 'Opening of Parliament' issues, the 4d pair KH (King's Heads), the KH 1½d tete beche pair, the 1/- orange airmail postmarked JOHANNESBURG 27,  the 1926 pair of 4d triangles and the block of 4 3d black and red Groote Schuurs. Nice! I am not a fan of JIPEX mini-sheets but many are. You show many single stamps which most serious SA collectors will dismiss because they are not horizontal pairs which are valued more than vertical pairs. That is a subject for another conversation. Thanks for sharing this with us. Now for your other offerings!

Such interesting feedback  for which I thank you. I've now done a fair amount of posting and will hold off unless anyone is interested in stamps from same period heading up into North and Central Africa. eg, Portugese East Africa, Portugese Nyasa, Portugese West Africa,  Nyasaland, Belgian Congo,  French West Africa, Kenya Colony, Uganda & British East Africa, Tangayika German East Africa etc, etc and even a St Helena 1d stamp with a war tax frank on it.  Again my thanks Steve for your comments. Regards, Doug

It's always a pleasure to look at stamps. The best thing for me about going to a stamp fair is the fact that I can lose myself and forget about  the world when looking at stuff for sale and, contradictorily, become extrovert with the banter and humour. This conviviality is often better value than the stamps and postal history on sale.

As a collector I have a soft spot for British Africa but also Portugese East and West Africa, Nyassa, BCA / Nyasaland, Belgian Congo, KUT, German East Africa. I don't collect GEA but have dabbled in it after buying a sheet that had a GEA Usumbara Railway postcard and several stamps from stations along the line, etc. So, it's all grist to the mill. If you are still inclined to do so, please put your material up when it is convenient. I am pleased that you have been able to do this so soon after signing-in. Most members never post anything. Possibly the process is too difficult?

Hi Steve,

I will get on with some more uploading again. I have been distracted with some other pressing matters.  As feedback the uploading process - is very easy. Doug

On revisiting your Union of SA post I felt compelled to comment on the JIPEX mini sheets. Many Union of SA stamp collections will include a pair of 1/2d and 1d examples of these sheets.

Apparently, two 'Stamp Sheets' (each with 6 stamps) were introduced at the JIPEX Stamp Exhibition 1936 in Johannesburg on 2nd November 1936. What this statement does not tell you is that there were 31 different types of these stamp sheets. I hope the following will not leave you as confused as I have been about them.

Earlier this year I saw a Zoom display that included the 1/2d value sheets in 10 different advertisement combinations and 1d value sheets in 21 different advertisement combinations. According to the SACC (South African Colour Catalogue 2008/9) this represents the full set of issued 1/2d and 1d sheets. However, the SACC only shows and it only lists two sheets, a 1/2d and a 1d. So "What about the other 29 sheets?" and "Were all 31 sheets issued at JIPEX?"

In answer to the last question I  imagine that they were as they are overprinted 'JIPEX 1936'. I am beginning to suspect that the different sheets were issued at different times during JIPEX. But why are they not properly listed for the benefit of collectors? As I understood from Errol's display "the scarce Sheet is No. 7". But this one is a mystery to me as SACC lists only two sheets, No. 68 1/2d and No. 69 1d, and makes no listing of the other 29 varieties.

I imagine that No. 7 exists as an esoteric specialist listing somewhere, one that I do not have. Readers are invited to highlight it on the SAPC site if it is in the common domain. Please advise if I am making a fool of myself. Again!

The two JIPEX sheets that you show above are NOT the two listed as No. 68 and 69 by SACC, the ones you would assume (ASS-U-ME) were issued at JIPEX. So, which ones are yours? It would be great if the SAPC site could provide numbered images of all 10 x 1/2d and 21 x 1d JIPEX sheet advertisement combinations as an aid to clarifying which ones we have. The internet is ideal for throwing light on such matters.

I see that the 1/2d value Jipex sheet that you show above only promotes SAPTO  services. This is also true of the three sheets shown in my report on the SACS Zoom meeting. So, leaping to assumptions again, do any advertisers other than SAPTO appear on the 1/2d sheets? Some Tobacco advertisers can be seen on the 1d sheets. I know that the Robinson Stamp Company was an advertiser. But on which one? Can we look at starting an on-line listing with images of the respective sheets, please! Specialist advice on this subject will be valued.

Thanks Steve, that's interesting and quite a bit to digest. I have readied uploads and will post now files separately for Zululand, Nyassa, Portugese E&W Africa, GEA.

I found this today while preparing some display pages for the SACS (South African Collectors' Society) meeting in Letchworth on Saturday 30th October 2021. I bought this cover because it is addressed to HMS Carlisle in Simonstown. She made several trips to Tristan da Cunha which added greatly to the postal history of that island. Someone has marked the JIPEX 36 sheet '8' in pencil, (top right). I am wondering if this is sheet 8? And how do we go about getting some sort of reference to distinguish the 31 JPIEX 36 sheets from each other?

Oh.... another thing, I noticed is that this is an item of JIPEX 36 printed stationery.

PS: I can now confirm that this JIPEX sheet is indeed No. 8 in the series.
