October Newsletter Issue 7

Adel’s first week back in South Africa after her extended UK trip covered the well-attended Paarl Nationals at the Boschenmeer Golf Estate and Jim Findlay RDPSA’s Zoom presentation on the ‘1914 South African Rebellion’ which I was lucky to sit in on and learn from. John Handman is now the new Chairman of the PFSA, (the Philatelic Federation of SA). Richard Stroud RDPSA submits interesting postal history material on ‘the situation in Paardeberg’ and General Piet Cronje’s surrender; Hugh Amoore describes the rules on redirected mail in the Cape Colony; Jamie Smith requests your help on a cover possibly from Sir Rudolph van Slatin, Inspector General of the Sudan. And more… Like Adel’s philatelic accessories, her souvenir card with silver leaves from the 1947 Royal Tour, plus her useful advice on Ethiopia fake overprints.

September Newsletter Issue 6

Adel’s enthusiasm for stamping in the UK is profound. She writes “My UK trip has come to an end. I want to thank everyone who shared a meal or a cuppa with me. The best part were the collections that I got to see, so many of you opened your homes to me and shared your most prized collections. I am in awe of you guys, and I am inspired to get myself into gear and improve my own collection. A special thanks to Jamie and Nomvula for hosting me and all your love and support, I am truly grateful for the opportunity”. This month she had Ian Matheson showing the ‘Cayes of Belize and Penalty Stamps’, Richard Stroud contributing ‘Basutoland via Aliwal North’ while on her desk she had ‘Native Tax – Durban’ and a Stockport Railways Parcel Stamp. Jamie must be envious! There’s a nice photo below of Jamie browsing boxes at the Stockport Stamp Fair.

August Newsletter Issue 5

Adel writes “The excitement of Wimbledon and the Tour De France is now behind us. I attended a few more fairs and the next stamp event in the UK is Stampex towards the end of October. The hospitality I’ve received here is unmatched – I must however complain about the summer sun being half strength, the table salt isn’t as salty as back home and the long-life milk here is so watered down compared to what I am used to. But my philatelic experiences here have been fantastic!” There is a wide range of items, only a few are South African, There are reports on Midpex (Coventry) and York, a Reader Submission by Richard Stroud RDPSA of a three-country multiple franking (below) and ‘Mails under London’ showing the underground mail system. Amd much more….

A cover from Jamie Smith (nice photo of him!) was written by Colonel H Brackenbury during the Gordon Relief Expedition. Well worth a look. A very useful way of Staying in Touch!
